About De-matting
Mats are not just cosmetic. Once a tangle tightens it pulls on the skin constantly, traps moisture, and hides sores, hot spots, and parasites from view. De-matting is the process of getting that off your dog safely.
We assess every mat individually — how tight, how close to the skin, how much of the coat is involved. Loose tangles get worked out with a comb and a de-matting solution. Anything welded to the skin comes off with clippers, because pulling it out is genuinely painful and can tear skin that has already thinned underneath.

* Some coats simply need more time — heavy double coats, dense undercoats, and long silky hair all take extra brushing, drying, and scissoring. Common Questions
Can you save the coat instead of shaving it?
Sometimes, and we'll always try when it's fair to the dog. But humane de-matting has a limit, and past it a short cut is the kinder option — the coat grows back.
Why does the skin look red after de-matting?
Skin under a tight mat has been starved of air and circulation. Some pinkness is normal for a day or two; we'll point out anything we think your vet should see.
